The School of Humanities and Sciences (H&S) is the foundation of a liberal arts education at Stanford. The school encompasses 24 departments and 25 interdisciplinary programs. H&S is home to fundamental and applied research, where free, open, and critical inquiry is pursued across disciplines. As the university's largest school, H&S serves as the foundation of a Stanford undergraduate education no matter which discipline students pursue as a major. Graduate students work alongside world-renowned faculty to pursue and shape foundational research that leads to breakthroughs and discoveries that shed new light on the past, influence the present, and shape the future. Together, faculty and students in H&S engage in inspirational teaching, learning, and research every day.
The Department of Biology at Stanford University is devoted to discovering fundamental knowledge of the living world: from the behavior of single molecules to dynamics of cells, organisms, populations, and interactions of biological systems with our planet. We are dedicated to developing innovative training experiences for the next generation of biologists, and to building an inclusive learning environment that unites scientists from diverse disciplines and life experiences to creatively address critical questions for today's world.
The Hernandez-Nunez Lab seeks to understand how the brain and body communicate as an integrated network. This includes studying (1) how brain circuits and behavior are modulated by viscerosensory information, (2) how the central nervous system works together with motor and sensory autonomic circuits to implement feedback control of organ function, and (3) the function of intraorgan nervous systems. The Hernandez-Nunez Lab is seeking a Life Science Research Professional 1 (LSRP 1) with wet lab experience, ideally (but not necessarily) in zebrafish. The LSRP 1 will work under the general supervision of Prof. Luis Hernandez-Nunez and will be part of our multidisciplinary research team. The LSRP 1's primary focus will be on studying organism-wide circuits for brain-body interactions in larval zebrafish. The project will involve using spatial transcriptomics and other molecular profiling methods, as well as generating transgenic zebrafish. The LSRP 1 will receive mentorship in zebrafish systems neuroscience, modern microscopy techniques, and data analysis directly from Prof. Hernandez-Nunez and from senior lab members. This is a 100% FTE, 1-year fixed-term, non-exempt position. This position will be based on the Stanford campus.
Core duties include planning approach to experiments in support of research projects, independently conducting experiments, applying theories and methods of a life science discipline to interpret and perform analyses of experiment results, reviewing literature on an ongoing basis to remain current with new procedures, contributing to publication of findings as needed, helping with general lab maintenance, and assisting with orientation and training of new staff or students on lab procedures or techniques. Other duties may also be assigned.
Education and experience requirements include a bachelor's degree in a related scientific field, general understanding of scientific principles, demonstrated ability to apply theoretical knowledge of science principals to problem solve work, ability to maintain detailed records of experiments and outcomes, general computer skills and ability to quickly learn and master computer programs, databases, and scientific applications, and ability to work under deadlines with general guidance. Preferred requirements include general proficiency with wet lab procedures.
Working conditions may require working in close proximity to blood borne pathogens, working in an environment where animals are used for teaching and research, working with hazardous materials and/or infectious diseases, and performing tasks that require the use of personal protective equipment. The position may at times require extended or unusual work hours based on research requirements and business needs.
The expected pay range for this position is $32.58 to $38.48 per hour. Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location and external market pay for comparable jobs.
