Are you looking to be part of a dynamic team that protects the environment? The Department of Fish and Wildlife's Warm Springs Hatchery (WSH) is seeking a motivated individual to work as a Fish and Wildlife Technician located in beautiful Sonoma Counties wine country in Geyserville. You will be part of our hatchery team working within the Russian River steelhead mitigation program producing up to 500,000 yearling steelhead per year. You will gain onsite experience by becoming part of our valued team performing fish culture activities and routine maintenance.

This position will be assigned to the Warm Springs Hatchery and assist Coyote Valley Fish Hatcheries as needed including the following duties:

- Feed and care for juvenile and adult fish.
- Clean fish rearing tanks, pick up dead fish, and keep simple records of fish losses.
- Monitor condition and behavior of fish and notifying supervisor and/or Fish Habitat  Assistant of any potential problems.
- Monitor in-flowing water conditions, alerting supervisor and/or Fish Habitat Assistant of potential problems.
- Care for steelhead eggs and fish at various stages of development. - Measure/weigh  eggs and fish and assessing their health and condition.
- Alert supervisors and/or Fish Habitat Assistant of potential problems while doing health assessments.
- Assist with fish weight counts, grading, inventorying, loading, and planting of fish.
- In absence of permanent staff at the site, assume more responsibility for site activities  such as fish stocking.
- Clean incubator stacks, jars, fish rearing units and equipment.
- Use handheld power tools to perform basic maintenance at the facility, and will perform  a variety of maintenance and repair tasks that include: weeding, mowing, painting,  plumbing, grounds care, cleaning and maintaining buildings and equipment; welding  (gas, arc and tig), fabricate equipment out of wood and metal; and operating gas and  electrical powered equipment and hand tools - drills, saws, sanders.

Working Conditions

Work in wet conditions, adverse weather, and traverse uneven surfaces. Involves swimming up to 50 yards and, stay afloat for five minutes, and lifting up to 40 pounds. Work weekends and holidays on a rotational basis with other staff and on a continued basis during periods of heavy operational need. Must be able to operate a motor vehicle and equipment and be prepared to travel using a state vehicle. Maintain a valid commercial driver’s license with tank and air brake endorsement and current medical card. Typical work hours are 0730 - 1600 hours.

Special Requirements

Must be able to:
- Lift 40 pounds.
- Swim 50 yards and stay afloat at least five minutes.
- Operate a motor vehicle and possess or obtain a valid Class B driver’s license with  Tanker and Air break endorsements.
- Use respirators and participate in the Department’s respirator protection program, and other required personal protective equipment (PPE) and certifications.
- Wear a uniform in accordance with CDFW’s Operations Manual Section 12901 uniform  standards.

Interpersonal Skills: Ability to work independently and in a team setting. Must work well with others and respond favorably to feedback.
